CHAPTER

19

Michael and Seradim watched Ben Feinberg talk to Cindy in front of the UCLA library. Cindy sat on the front steps with her German shepherd guide dog, Sam, at her feet. Ben held the latest newspaper.

“When Israel used atomic weapons on the Russians, one of the prophecies we studied was fulfilled.” Ben pointed at the headlines. “The enormous earthquake that followed cracked the earth open and swallowed most of the remainder of the Russian army. It must have been an act of God, along with the fact that the nuclear missiles fired by Libyan artillerymen from the Pisgah mountain range ‘accidentally’ landed on the Palestinian guerrillas surrounding Jerusalem instead of killing the Jews they were intended to kill.”

Michael observed, “Ben is shaken because he understands the spiritual implications of what’s happened in the Holy Land. Reality is setting in.”

Seradim smiled. “Maybe the son is about to follow in the footsteps of the father. The prophet Ezekiel said this war would show Jews everywhere that the God who loves and delivers Israel is alive and well. Ben is certainly examining the headlines with unusual intensity. Let’s get closer.”

“Sure. We’ll stand next to them. I need to give Ben a special encouragement.”

“Ben, we’ve carefully studied the Scriptures Joe McCoy gave you.” Cindy’s voice was grave and serious. “Everything is just as the Bible said it would be. We can’t ignore the implications.”

“I know. I know.” Ben folded the paper. “For the first time in my life I’ve asked God to show me the truth. I don’t want to accept what the McCoys have been telling us, but the handwriting sure seems to be on the wall.”

“I’ve been trying to teach my parents.” Cindy patted her dog on the head. “They listen, but they are more terrified than anything else. Nothing in their background prepares them to understand. Half the time the news reports frighten them, and my Bible lessons leave Mom and Dad in complete consternation the other half. I feel that nothing is like it was.”

“Certainly not for the Russians.” Ben rolled his eyes. “And not for my family, either. No one has said it out loud yet, but I think we’ve already thrown in the towel on the last of our doubts. How can we ignore the meaning of the total defeat of Russia and her allies?”

“Ben.” Cindy looked toward the sky as if her sightless eyes seemed to see something she couldn’t quite perceive. “I’ve been trying to pray like the Bible suggests. What I ask, I ask in Jesus’ name, with very interesting results.”

Ben frowned. “In what way?”

“I have the strangest sense that Someone is there, that I’m being heard. I think it’s working.”

“I thought the issue is what we believe . . . having the right ideas.”

“Maybe it’s much more,” Cindy pondered. “What if this whole business is about making contact? A personal relationship with Jesus?”

“That’s a new wrinkle.”

“Here’s another one for you.” Cindy smiled mischievously. “I’ve been having these unusual intuitions. Hunches if you like.”

“And? . .
